Mission Zero
At the end of the day, what's most important is for every employee and contractor to be safe and injury free. In an ever changing world, a constant commitment to improvement is needed to remain a leader. Yesterday's leaders are tomorrow's laggards.
Canexus initiated Mission Zero to re-energize our Responsible Care® program and enhance our leadership position in all categories: zero injuries, zero environmental incidents, zero transportation events, and zero process safety incidents.
Strengthening Our Safety Culture
Mission Zero is as much about culture and behavior as it is about measuring results. A cross-functional team representing all areas of the organization has assembled and developed a 5-year vision to create a strong safety culture based on the following elements:
- Our employees and contractors hold safety as a core value, integrated into all activities on or off the job.
- Leadership actions are delivered in the context of safety.
- Our goal is a zero Recordable Injury Rate.
- Our employees number one priority is Responsible Care®. They are committed, engaged and driving continuous improvement in all areas of the organization.
- Canexus is a Best in Class Responsible Care® performer.
Mission Zero in Action
In 2010/2011, the focus for Mission Zero was to implement the following tools throughout the organization:
- Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
This tool helps integrate accepted safety and health principles and practices into a particular task or job operation. In a JHA, each basic step of the job is mapped out to identify potential hazards and to recommend the safest way to do the job. - Field Level Hazard Assessment (FLHA)
In this assessment, workers are led through an exercise at the beginning of the day/shift to identify jobs, tasks, applicable hazards and to put controls in place to ensure risk levels are acceptable. It is typically conducted when reviewing work permits and revisited when the initial job changes so that workers are mindful of the changing hazard landscape of their work. They are prompted to stop, think and put controls in place before initiating a job. - Safety Observations
Safety Observation programs increase awareness of safety expectations, contribute to improved safety performance and help achieve safety goals and targets. A successful observation process is one which identifies and immediately responds to employee behaviors and conditions, corrects noncompliance and provides positive reinforcement. - Contractor Safety
A review of our current Contractor Safety programs is underway. Our goal is to further standardize our programs and to make step improvements to contractor qualification and post evaluation processes. - Safety Survey
An updated safety survey will be rolled out in later 2011 as a follow up to our 2008 survey. It will evaluate programs rolled out since 2008 and provide a new benchmark.
