We value the long-term relationships with community members in the locations where we operate. We work to ensure their safety, to educate them on our products and emergency response procedures and to help contribute to the overall wellbeing of the community.
Below are examples of recent community involvement:
Firefighter’s Friend: Joining Forces to Enhance Safety
Employees in our Brazil operations have been working closely with the Espirito Santos Fire Department with the unique objective of acting to prevent emergency incidents when transporting chemicals. Canexus has provided several emergency training sessions and helped donate electronic equipment. In return, the fire department has enhanced skills to deal with delicate missions in unwanted situations. This two-way partnership won Canexus the Firefighter’s Friend Commendation – an award given by the Fire Brigade to persons, civil, military and/or church institutions that have helped advance the Fire Brigade’s mission.
Promoting Safety through Awareness, Training and Early Detection
As noted in Brazil, all of our Emergency Response Teams routinely interact with local emergency responders including fire departments to provide training and emergency response considerations in the event an incident involving one of our products were to occur.
Our North Vancouver plant also recently donated a portable chlorine monitor to the city’s fire department. This monitor, the same as what we use in our plants, provides both employees and emergency responders with an immediate, audible indication as to whether chlorine is present in the area and its concentration. This helps determine appropriate evacuation procedures.
$100,000 Red Cross Donation for Brandon Flood
Our commitment to Responsible Care® extends beyond safety and stewardship throughout the chemistry value chain. It also recognizes communities in time of need. In May 2011, Canexus donated $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Floods Response. We were proud to support the Red Cross in its mission to help local people affected by the flood.
Similarly, when Hurricane Katrina hit the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, Canexus donated US$10,000 through the Chlorine Chemistry Division to support the American Red Cross in its Katrina relief efforts.
Anzol Project: Broadening Horizons Through Social and Skill-Based Learning
Since 2003, Canexus, in a partnership with Ação Comunitária do Espírito Santo (Community Action of Espírito Santo) in Brazil, has supported the growth of a community-based initiative – the Anzol Project. The Project promotes personal and social development by providing a feeling of citizenship and social belonging through art-education and qualification workshops for generating income, which benefits not only the women, but their families. To date, around 1,600 adults, teenagers and children have benefited.
United Way: Contributing to Brighter Communities
We are involved in the United Way campaigns in all of our communities. Canexus matches all employee contributions and United Way uses these funds to finance initiatives in the local communities.
